Student Raises Money for Hurricane Maria Relief

When an empathic sixth grader met with a compassionate faculty advisor, lessons were learned, lives were touched, and the spirit of community service was further developed.
That is what happened when Dylan Hendrix, a new member to Sanford’s Middle School family, decided that he wanted to assist the people of Puerto Rico who were affected by Hurricane Maria. In order to bring his plan to fruition, Dylan reached out to World Language Instructor and Department Co-chair Jennifer McKay for guidance.

Señora McKay helped guide Dylan through every step of the process. They first secured permission for the project from Eph Humphreys, head of middle school. Dylan and Señora McKay then researched various relief efforts, deciding upon the Ricky Martin People of Puerto Rico Foundation because 100% of the donated funds would be used for hurricane relief.

Dylan created an informative collection box, sponsored a jeans day, and greeted families at car line with details about his efforts. Additionally, he spoke to students in both the fifth/sixth grade and seventh/eighth grade morning meetings so that all students in the building would understand the effort and have a chance to participate.

At the end of the campaign, Dylan and Señora McKay were able to take the amazing sum of $1,100 to the business office for deposit. In the process, Dylan met with Accounting Assistant Chrissy Bonner, who outlined the actions a non-profit school would take in order make sure the money made its way to Dylan’s designated charity.

Señora McKay ensured that Dylan enjoyed ownership—and an understanding—of every step in the process. Working together, they took a simple idea of helping those in need and made it a reality. Stacey Hendrix, Dylan’s mother and Upper School world language instructor, shared: “What Jennifer and Dylan accomplished with the support of the community is one of many examples of how Sanford spirit goes beyond our campus."
