Sanford Soccer Players Share Time and Talent with Special Olympics
When Gary Cimaglia, senior director of sports for Special Olympics Delaware, requested help for an April 23rd Special Olympics Delaware School Soccer Event, 15 members of the girls’ varsity soccer team, along with head coach Heather Taylor and assistant coach Emily Amendum, responded with an enthusiastic YES!!!
With events taking place in all three counties of Delaware, the Sanford students traveled to Kirkwood Soccer Club to be of assistance so school-age children from New Castle County could be afforded the opportunity to participate in various levels of competition and soccer skills training. In 2016, more than 1,600 Delaware students participated statewide.
The girls were responsible for carrying all the soccer equipment from the truck to the fields (cones, goals, tables, chairs, etc.) and setting up seven soccer fields. They assembled14 goals to be used, which required a lot of problem-solving as there were no directions and three different types! Sanford's student-athletes, who were referees and scorekeepers, also broke everything down and returned all the equipment to the truck.
Jon Buzby, director for media relations for Special Olympics Delaware, told the girls that they did a great job, and that the 5 v 5 tournament ran smoothly because of their help. Coach Taylor shared: “I am always incredibly proud of my girls. They are dedicated scholars, athletes, and community members. These young women are more than willing to provide service when the opportunity presents itself, as it did today.”
Sanford is known for its participation in community service related activities. Coach Stan Waterman and his boys’ varsity team volunteered at the organization’s winter basketball skills program. Kudos to the girls’ soccer team and to all the varsity athletes who helped to make Special Olympics Delaware events successful.
