Each year the One Village Alliance (OVA) sponsors a Raising Kings Awards Reception on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, where community members who are walking in the footsteps of the great leader are recognized and honored for their efforts to help raise the next generation of “King” leaders. This year, two of the four awards were presented to men associated with Sanford School.
On Monday, January 15, Coach Stan Waterman received the Black History in the Making (BHIM) Legacy Award and long-time Sanford parent, former board member, and school supporter Dr. Ray Blackwell, chief of cardiac surgery at Christiana Care, was honored with the BHIM Contemporary Award. Both men and their families attended the gala, which was held at the Mitchell Center for African American History in Wilmington.
Coach Waterman is a product of Wilmington’s inner-city. He went to the University of Delaware and has enjoyed a twenty-five (and counting) year career as a social worker, educator, and coach. He explained, “I hope that I can be an inspiration to young people and allow them to see that their possibilities are limitless. I work at one of the most prestigious independent schools in the region, and I have even coached the USA Jr. National Team to a gold medal. I want young people to realize that a solid work ethic, drive, determination, and a competitive spirit works not only on the basketball court but also in achieving success in life. I am humbled by this honor, but I truly am committed to supporting OVA’a mission of helping youth grow and achieve their greatness.”
One of Dr. Blackwell’s daughters, Asia ‘20, shared, “My family truly enjoyed being a part of the special evening at the Mitchell Center. While we are proud of my dad for receiving this high honor, we were even prouder that he was recognized for being a role model in the community. Also, his acceptance speech was very inspiring.”
OVA is a non-profit organization founded to grow youth into their true greatness through education, entrepreneurship, and the arts. Raising Kings is an evidence-based, year-round collaborative project led by OVA.
Congratulations to Coach Waterman and Dr. Blackwell for their work within the community and the positive influences they are having on future generations of leaders.
