Sanford Athletes Receive Academic Award

For the second consecutive year, the Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team has received the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Team Academic Award. The honor was bestowed upon the 2016–17 team, whose cumulative grade point average was 3.7.
Upper School Math Instructor Heather Taylor, who had led the soccer team for three seasons, sets the tone for academic success by stressing from the onset that academics must be the number one priority for each girl. She allows, even encourages, students to report late to practice if they need to meet with a teacher. Taylor’s favorite saying, “Do the little things well, and the big things will happen,” is what she hopes her team members will carry into both their academics and athletics and eventually become a foundation to take into their adult lives. “Academically speaking, if the girls learn to do the little things like taking a few minutes to study each night, complete their homework on a daily basis, be present in class, and be proactive with their communication, they will find success. Additionally, I tell my girls all the time how incredibly proud I am to be their coach. I am fortunate to work with a group of genuinely kind girls who have a tremendous work ethic, both in the classroom and on the field.”

The High School Team Academic Award is given to teams led by active USC members whose teams have a composite grade point average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale. All players on the roster are included when the determination is made. The award is designed to celebrate and acknowledge the collective commitment to excellence in academics of student-athletes in their studies over the course of a full academic year.

Congratulations to Coach Taylor and the Lady Warriors Soccer Team. Keep up the outstanding work on and off of the field!
