Students Recognized in Ecological Art Contest

Two Sanford middle school students, Mason Giordano and Catherine Gluodenis, and one upper school student, Hannah LaPoint, impressed the judges of an ecological art contest with their interpretations of a somewhat unusual subject: the horseshoe crab.
The contest was sponsored by the Ecological Research and Development Group (ERDG), a Delaware-based group dedicated to the conservation of the world’s four remaining species of horseshoe crab.

The “Young Voices” art competition, which ERDG launched in 1998, received 400 entries from four countries this year, from artists at levels ranging from PreK to ninth grade. “We celebrate these young environmental stewards,” the organization said in a press release, “whose compassion for the conservation of this remarkable species, expressed through art, has elevated and transformed our perception of this often-misunderstood marine.”

Thirty-one of the “most compelling” entries, including Mason’s and Catherine’s linoleum block prints and Hannah’s colored pencil drawing, were selected as winners. The list is posted on ERDG’s website, and its Facebook page will be featuring one or two artists per week beginning this month.

Congratulations to Mason, Catherine, and Hannah on their accomplishments!
