Sanford’s Board of Trustees is committed to ensuring that our Preschool through 12th-grade college-prep school continues to remain a leader among private schools in the greater Wilmington area and throughout Delaware. The board’s leadership, strategic focus, and commitment to the school’s mission and principles have directed unparalleled growth in recent years.

  • Desmond Baker

    Desmond Baker is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. He holds Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the City College of The City University of New York (CCNY–CUNY). Desmond began his engineering career with the Proctor & Gamble Company in Cincinnati Ohio, and joined The DuPont Company in 1980. In 1985, Desmond started Desmond A Baker & Associates, LLC., a full-service consulting engineering firm located in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1996, Desmond was selected as one of two engineers in the state of Delaware as Fellow in Consulting Engineering Council of America. Desmond has professional engineer registrations in Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Jamaica, West Indies. He is a member and vice chair of the Riverfront Development Corporation, vice chair of the City of Wilmington Planning Commission, a member of the City of Wilmington Zoning Board, a member and vice chair of The State of Delaware Heath Facilities Bond Committee, a board member of the State of Delaware Work Force Investment Board, a board member of the State of Delaware Higher Education Commission, a member of the board of Christina Cultural Arts Center, a member of the board of DOEC, and a member of the Delaware Chapter of the American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU). A Rotarian for 24 years and a past president of the Wilmington Caesar Rodney Rotary Club, Desmond is also an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and The Kappa Achievement Center. He is married to Dr. Glenda Smith-Baker and the proud father of Norkia, Ian (Tay) and Haley '17, and a granddad to twins Sage and Somry.
  • Theodore Dwyer III

    Ted Dwyer is a senior vice president in Global Human Resources at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Ted joined MBNA in 1994 and has held numerous leadership positions in both MBNA and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Prior to joining Global Human Resources in 2006, Ted was the chief of staff for the chairman of MBNA’s Global Card Services international businesses. Ted holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Pennsylvania State University and earned his Executive MBA from Penn State’s Smeal College of Business in 2008. Ted is a previous board member of the B+ Foundation in Wilmington, Delaware and is the past-chair of the Four Diamonds Fund Board in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Both organizations' goals are to conquer pediatric cancer. Ted is chair of the Sanford Board of Trustee's Strategic Planning Committee, and also serves on the Committee on Trustees. Ted lives in Hockessin, Delaware with his wife (Heather) and two children (Brandon & Ashley).
  • Jacqueline Filak

    Jackie Filak is a marketing research consultant who owns her own firm, Creative Research Solutions, in Hockessin, Delaware. Jackie is very proud of her contributions to Sanford, which include serving on the marketing committee, working on survey execution and analysis, and helping with SRTC productions. Her daughter Sarah is a member of the Sanford class of 2018 and her daughter, Anna ’13, is a student at the University of Delaware. Jackie graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1984 with a BA in economics. In her spare time she serves on the Board of Directors of Westminster Swim Club and volunteers for the Sanford Ridge community, where she lives with her daughters and her husband, Doug.
  • Laura Giardina

    Laura Giardina is president of the Sanford Home and School Association.

    After beginning her undergraduate studies at Ripon College, Laura graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Highest Honors in political science from Indiana University South Bend. During that time she did what few undergraduates can—she presented an academic paper with Dr. Elizabeth Bennion at the National Conference of the Midwest Political Science Association. After leaving IU, she went to Whirlpool Corporation and worked as a legal specialist in marketing law. Laura left the Fortune 500 company just before the birth of her son William '27, so she could focus on her growing family. She has always enjoyed volunteering in a variety of ways, supporting orgainzations and causes that include Habitat for Humanity, children's literacy programs such as the Benton Harbor, Michigan Help One Student to Succeed Program (HOSTS), Read Aloud Delaware, and her son's soccer team.

    Born in the Chicago suburbs, Laura is a proud graduate of Prospect High School and lover of all the culinary delights of the Windy City such as deep dish pizza, dipped beef sandwiches, and the Chicago-style hot dog; her favorite meal of all time came from a quaint, back street café in Rome featuring a carbonara to melt your soul and the finest table wine in the world.

    Laura is married to her loving husband Matthew, a Ph.D. chemist at Agilent Technologies. She enjoys being a dog mom to the beloved family pet Butters and is a devoted mother to William. William is the reason Laura dedicates her time and talents to support Sanford School.
  • Christopher Grundner

    Chris Grundner is the president and CEO of the Welfare Foundation, a private Delaware-based nonprofit organization that uses the income generated from its assets to make philanthropic grants that promote the social welfare of people and communities across the state of Delaware and in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the State University of New York at Fredonia and also graduated summa cum laude with an MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Prior to joining the Welfare Foundation, Chris enjoyed many professional successes with The Sabre Group, JPMorgan Chase, and, most recently, as president and CEO the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (best known as DANA). Chris also founded The Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation in 2005 after his wife, Kelly, lost her battle against the disease. Through this foundation, two awareness initiatives were created—GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME and Tulips Against Tumors—which became national programs with the National Brain Tumor Society after the two organizations merged in 2010. The foundation also started Delaware’s first-ever brain tumor awareness walk in 2008, which has raised over one and a half million dollars for the cause since its inception. Chris and his wife, Susan, are the parents of Cooper '26 and Cameron (CJ) '29. In addition to trying to be the best husband and dad he can be, Chris is also a member of the Vestry and a Eucharistic minister at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, the chairman of the board of Philanthropy Delaware, and an avid cyclist.
  • Andrew Jefferson

    Andy Jefferson, J.D., is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of The 6Ds® Company in Wilmington, Delaware. Andy is an author and frequent and popular global speaker on the subject of turning talent development into competitive advantage. Andy is an accomplished executive with a career spanning executive, operational and legal roles. Andy is a co-author of the bestselling The Six Disciplines of Breakthrough Learning: How to Turn Training and Development into Business Results (San Francisco: Pfeiffer, 2006, Second Edition Pfeiffer 2010, Third Edition Wiley 2015) Getting Your Money’s Worth from Training and Development (San Francisco: Pfeiffer, 2009) and The Field Guide to the 6Ds (Wiley 2014), among others. Prior to founding the 6Ds Company, Andy served as the Chief Executive Officer of Fort Hill Company and of Vital Home Services, L.L.C. Andy is admitted to the Bar of the State of Delaware. He serves on several corporate and non-profit boards including as Chairman of The Graham Foundation, Trustee of The Unidel Foundation, and Trustee of The Pilot School. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware and graduated with honors from the Widener University School of Law, where he served for many years on the school’s Board of Overseers. Andy and his wife, Heather, are the parents of Sanford student McKinley '26.
  • Holly Kalish

    A resident of Avondale, Pennsylvania, Holly Kalish holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from the University of Delaware. An accomplished and industry-honored nurse practitioner, Holly is currently a full-time homemaker who has contributed her time, talent, and expertise to Sanford in countless ways. She has served as a homeroom parent, a Home & School grade representative, a parent ambassador, and member of several school committees including the Website Committee and the Board of Trustees’ Development Committee. Holly and her husband, Eric, have three children: Lindsay '22, Carson '25, and Morgan'27. When she is fortunate enough to find free time, Holly enjoys running, cooking (a self-confessed “foodie”), reading, and spending time outdoors with her family. She looks forward to many future opportunities to continue to serve the Sanford community.
  • Diane Kedash

    Diane Kedash was born and raised in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. A graduate of the University of Delaware with a communications degree, Diane worked at MBNA America for 24 years where she met her husband, David. She held a variety of executive positions, primarily in the operating areas (e.g. customer satisfaction, credit, and fraud) and personnel. In 1994, Diane and David lived in Chester, England, working as part of the start up team of MBNA International. During that year, they had an opportunity to travel throughout Europe. Diane and David have four children (Matthew '21, Andrew '22, Lauren '26, and Miles '26), all of whom attend Sanford. Diane enjoys spending time with family and friends, locally and at the beach, and she loves traveling, cooking and reading. From 1994 through 2002, she served on the board of directors at the Delaware Nature Society. Diane, who returned to volunteering after the twins began preschool, currently serves on Sanford’s Advancement Committee.
  • Susan Keiser

    Susan Keiser is a CPA and financial manager specializing in accounting policy, SEC reporting, and executive compensation. After earning her BS in Accounting from Wake Forest University in 1988, Susan went on to work for Pricewaterhousecoopers, Marvel Entertainment, and GE Capital (among others), before taking a position at JPMorgan Chase in 1999. Outside of work, Susan has taken leadership roles with the Delaware Society of CPAs; the Champions Task Force of the AICPA Women’s Initiatives Executive Committee; the Center for the Creative Arts in Yorklyn, Delaware; and the Accounting Advisory Board at Wilmington University. Her three children, Christopher ’19, Brian ’22, and Sean ’24, are all enrolled at Sanford. Susan has been a grade chair for the Sanford Annual Fund and has served on a feasibility and steering committee for the Board of Trustees. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and running. Susan looks forward to working with the Board to make a difference for Sanford.
  • William Lafferty

    William M. Lafferty is a partner at the Wilmington, Delaware law firm of Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell LLP. Bill’s law practice involves corporate and commercial litigation, with an emphasis on cases involving mergers and acquisitions and other shareholder disputes. Bill received his B.S. in Business Administration (with a concentration in Finance) from the University of Delaware in 1985 and his J.D. from The Dickinson School of Law in 1989. Bill’s three children—Aaron '19, Jacob '19, and Ava '20—have attended Sanford since prekindergarten. Bill and his wife, Melissa, have been active in their children’s classroom activities since they started at Sanford in 2005. In addition to volunteering at Sanford, Bill has served, pro bono, as a guardian ad litem for a number of young children involved in Family Court proceedings, served six years on the Delaware Board of Bar Examiners, served as chair of the Delaware Continuing Legal Education Commission, and currently serves on the Delaware State Bar Association Committee on Professional Ethics and on the Executive Committee at his law firm. In his spare time, Bill enjoys biking, running, swimming, and spending time with his family.
  • Lisa Lloyd-Washington

    Lisa Lloyd-Washington began her career with ICI Americas 25 years ago. Since that time, Lisa has successfully transferred her skills and knowledge to several functional areas within the company, resulting in the attainment of progressive and diversified pharmaceutical industry experience in finance, marketing, operations, disease management, managed care strategy, promotions and insight. Lisa currently holds the position of Sr. Insight Director in the MarketAccess and Patient Strategies area. Lisa earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Accounting with a minor in Spanish and an MBA from the University of Delaware in 1989 and 1995, respectively. Lisa, her husband, Shun, and their cherished daughter, Jana '26, are residents of Delaware. In her spare time, Lisa enjoys tutoring, family trips and training her daughter to be an avid Eagles fan.
  • Helen McCollough-Duzy

    Helen McCollough-Duzy is a gynecologist and founding partner at All About Women. Her small practice has grown from five physicians to 18 providers and 60 staff, making her well aware of the balance that must be achieved to continue growth of a business and addressing financial concerns to keep it viable and thriving. She has been on staff at Christiana Care Medical Center for almost 25 years and participated in many parts of its organizational hierarchy. Her responsibilities have included leading committees on value and improvement in the operating room, peer review, and physicians' credentialing. A passionate supporter of medical mission trips that go to Haiti two times a year, Helen is grateful to the middle school faculty and students who have contributed to this worthy cause and hopes to expand that support in the future.

    In addition to serving as a trustee, Helen is also a Sanford parent Her daughter Maddy is an eighth grader. Helen says the experience at Sanford has been very transformational for her family, noting that Maddy has blossomed in an environment that has supported her in academics as well as athletics and sharing that it has been a joy to get to know many families, administrators, and faculty at Sanford.

    Helen, who has an older daughter at the Villanova University School of Business, says, "We are a basketball fanatic family, and we enjoy cheering on teams both here at Sanford and at Villanova."


  • James McKeon

    Jim McKeon is the managing partner of Valentine Associates LLC, a Pennsylvania-based advisory practice specializing in strategic planning, finance, performance improvement, and mergers and acquisitions. Jim has served in executive positions of service organizations for more than 25 years while also pursuing his entrepreneurial interests.

    Throughout his career, Jim has been successful at growing several businesses by focusing on the fundamental strategies of improving infrastructure, aligning interests of constituencies, and ensuring accountability of execution while maintaining fiduciary responsibility.

    Jim has served on several boards and in governance roles in both the public and private sectors. He currently serves on the board of directors of Genesis HealthCare Inc. (NYSE: GEN) and is chair of the Governance, Quality and Compliance Committee. Jim also serves on the Board of ECMC Group, a nonprofit corporation with a mission to help students recognize and realize their potential by investing in, creating and providing innovative education solutions that support schools and improve student educational outcomes. At ECMC Group, he serves as the chair of the Audit Committee and is a member of the Investment Committee and the Governance and Compensation Committee. Jim also serves as an advisor to a number
    of start-up and development stage companies.

    Jim has been active in advocacy causes having previously served on the board of directors of The Tug McGraw Foundation, which is focused on quality of life for brain tumor patients and their families. Jim also served on the Finance Committee of Bancroft, a non-profit organization that assists children and young adults with developmental challenges.

    Jim holds a B.S. in accountancy from Villanova University. He and his wife Nancy are the parents of Sanford Class of 2019 member Ryan McKeon.
  • Kenny Mitchell ’93

    Sanford alumnus Kenny Mitchell is the head of consumer engagement at Gatorade, where he oversees the brand's integrated marketing efforts, including advertising, digital and social media, branded content and media strategy.

    Previously, Kenny oversaw Brand and Consumer Marketing for NASCAR, where he led the
    development and execution of the annual marketing plan and oversaw media strategies and
    planning. Prior to NASCAR, Kenny was vice president and general manager at the Dew Tour,
    a division of The NBC Sports Group. He was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Dew
    Tour brand and business, including partnerships, sales, marketing, content, events operations
    and execution.

    Before his time at NASCAR and the Dew Tour, Kenny spent nearly eight years at Gatorade
    in various brand and marketing roles, ultimately serving as a Director in the Sports Marketing
    group. In that role, he managed managing many of the brand's sports marketing partnerships,
    including athlete and property relations, sponsorship negotiations, activation and the creation
    and execution of retail programming.

    Kenny holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College in New Hanover, N.H., and an MBA from
    Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business. He was inducted into Dartmouth's Sports Hall of Fame
    as a member of the school's men's basketball team. He and his wife, Heather, live in Chicago
    and have a daughter named Carter.
  • Kathryn Nachbar

    Kathy Nachbar was graduated from Bryn Mawr College in  1979 with a B.A. in economics. She worked for Merrill Lynch in New York and Wilmington, and E.F. Hutton in Wilmington. After the birth of her first child, she left Hutton to become a stay at home mother. Her two sons, Michael (Class of 2005) and Brian (Class of 2008), were Sanford lifers, so Kathy spent many happy years involved with the school. During those years, Kathy was a room mother, Home & School class representative, Home & School officer, and co-chair of The Home & School Auction. Kathy has volunteered her time to community organizations including Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults, Meals on Wheels, and Friends of the Hockessin Library.
  • Barton Reese

    Barton Reese is the Head of Centreville Layton School in Centreville, Delaware. He has more than 25 years of educational experience in independent school education. He has extensive experience providing direct student services (teaching, advising, and coaching) and educational management and administration (business, marketing, admissions, and development). Bart grew up in Delaware and attended The Tatnall School from kindergarten through twelfth grade. He earned a B.S. in Education from Ursinus College, an M.S.M. from Wilmington University, and has completed his coursework for an Ed.D. at Wilmington University. He is scheduled to defend his dissertation in the spring of 2015. Bart, who served previously as Sanford School’s Director of Admission and Financial Aid, co-founded the Layton Preparatory School in 2004 with friend and Sanford colleague Patricia McLaughlin. In his spare time, Bart serves as a board member of Christ Church Episcopal Pre-School;, as treasurer of the Swiftwater Preserve (a fly fishing club), and as treasurer of the American Eagles Lacrosse Club. He lives in Wilmington with his wife, Kathryn, and daughters Landon, 13, and Elliot, 11.
  • Katherine Rosenthal

    Kate Rosenthal was the pastry chef at Bistro Jacques in Wilmington from 2013 until 2016. She earned a Diploma in Baking and Pastry from the Art Institute of Philadelphia in 2011, thus turning a delicious hobby into a professional endeavor. Kate also holds a bachelor's degree in English from Villanova, and spent two decades using her writing and editing skills in both the educational and business sectors. As the assistant manager at the Pennsylvania Institute for Certified Public Accountants, Kate produced over 450 continuing education seminars a year for the more than 19,000 members of the professional association, and then negotiated the site locations, meeting plans, course administration, and follow-up evaluations of those classes. Kate used those same marketing, budgeting, and management skills as Assistant Director of the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants. Kate has served Sanford as a longtime volunteer, and will draw upon her business and creative experiences as the newly installed president of Sanford’s Home and School Association. She and her husband, Ted, have two children, Matthew ’16 and Ali ’19. Kate enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
  • Sharon Rubin '80

    Sharon Rubin has been a member of the Sanford family for most of her life. After graduating from the school in 1980, she went on to earn a BA in geography and Spanish from the University of Delaware. Sharon and her husband, Ed, have lived in California, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, but eventually found their way back to Hockessin. Sharon’s daughter Alex '13 attends James Madison University, and her daughter Serena is a member of the Sanford Class of 2017. Her oldest child, Sydney, is a senior at Emory University. Sharon has a passion for community involvement, working as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and as a Sunday school teacher and director of Vacation Bible School. Sharon and her daughters also enjoy competing at horse shows.
  • Scott Sherr

    Scott J. Sherr is a local business owner, a philanthropist, a devoted husband, and a Sanford dad.

    Scott is the president and the third-generation owner of Diamond State Recycling Corporation in Wilmington and a partner in Double Diamond Recycling in Dover. Both are scrap metal recycling businesses that help to divert metals, such as aluminum cans, household appliances and metal construction debris, from landfills to mills that break them down into reusable commodities.

    Scott is an associate alumnus of Sanford School, having attended in fifth through tenth grades, and he has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and philosophy from Loyola College, Baltimore. He is a past president of the regional board of the Institute for Scrap Recycling Industries, an international trade organization representing businesses engaging in paper, plastics, electronics, rubber or metals recycling. He currently serves on the board of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, which built and operates Delaware’s only tall ship (a replica of the historical, Swedish Kalmar Nyckel) and which operates a maritime museum at Swedes Landing in Wilmington.

    Scott enjoys skiing in the winter and playing golf almost year-round. He lives in Greenville with his wife Nancy and son Cameron, who is in the fifth grade at Sanford School.
     
  • Gregg Somerville

    Gregg Somerville, a financial advisor since 1985, is the owner of Somerville Investments, a financial planning and investment firm. Gregg graduated from Cornell University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. Gregg and his wife, Lydia Cox, enrolled their son, Erik '13, in prekindergarten in 1999. Erik's younger sisters, Alexandra '16 and Leah '18, joined him as they entered the first grade, and all three have enjoyed exceptional Sanford experiences. Outside of work, Gregg participates in a variety of sports including basketball and biking. In addition to volunteering at Sanford, Gregg dedicates his time and talent to a youth mentoring program.
  • Stanley Sykora

    Stan Sykora was born and raised in Pitman, NJ. He attended Widener University for engineering and business before moving to Delaware to expand and run his family’s business, Erco Ceilings & Interiors. Stan has actively volunteered in several business and community organizations over the years. While residing in Historic New Castle, he took on the role of chairman of the City of New Castle’s Planning Commission. During his term he lead charge and process for an updated comprehensive plan and encouraged neighboring community involvement by hosting traveling town meetings, a platform still used today. He has served on and chaired the Board of Directors for the DE chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors, an organization he is passionate about and continues to serve. Stan is vice president of Westminster Swim Club where you’ll find him Saturday mornings in July volunteering at his children’s swim meets. Some of Stan’s favorite activities include water and mountain sports such as sailing, boating, and water/snow skiing with his family and friends. He also enjoys camping and has many opportunities to do so as den leader for Cub Scout pack 959 in Hockessin. Stan, his wife, Gina, and their children—Julia '18 and Charlie '20—value Sanford’s exceptional and unique community.
  • Kathy Zabel

    Kathy Zabel lived in California and Pittsburgh prior to relocating to the Delaware area. A graduate of the University of Delaware, Kathy earned a master's degree from West Chester University and then worked as a speech pathologist for 15 years. Her extensive leadership experience with numerous charities has exposed her to the many facets of non-profit organizations. Kathy and her husband, David Zabel, live in Kennett Square with their four children—Zoe '14 and current students Brad '17, Andrew '19, and Katie '21. In her spare time, Kathy enjoys tennis and paddle, mountain biking, and water sports.
