Counseling Speaker Series: 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People

10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People
David Yeager, University of Texas at Austin, Psychologist & Author
Young people have an innate need to be respected and admired. But few parents understand how to harness it. David Yeager can help. An expert on the psychology of grit and persistence, Yeager has spent years researching how to motivate and equip young people for success. He can show us why our conventional methods of communicating with young people aged 10 to 25 tend to leave everyone frustrated, and he can teach us a better way of ensuring the younger generation feels inspired, enthusiastic, and empowered to do their best work. Learn how to adopt what he calls the “mentor mindset,” a leadership style that taps into young people’s desire for respect. He offers highly effective and surprisingly easy-to-learn practices: like being transparent about your goals rather than expecting your children to read your mind or holding them to high standards rather than coddling them. This is crucial for anyone who wants to be a more effective parent.

Independent Schools, Black Students, and the College Application Process

Geipel Center - Rubin Family Auditorium - GEI-AUD
Sanford will be hosting a multi-school event in partnership with Tatnall School and St. Andrews School on Wednesday, February 25, at 6:00 PM (Geipel Auditorium), featuring Timothy Fields and Shereem Herndon-Brown. Both individuals are nationally recognized college admissions experts committed to helping families, especially those in Black and Brown communities, navigate an evolving admissions landscape. Together, they’ve authored the bestselling The Black Family’s Guide to College Admissions, hosted the Application to Admission podcast, and led a nonprofit focused on closing the information gap in college access. With more than 50 years of combined experience, they are dynamic speakers and thought leaders whose newly released second edition of The Black Family’s Guide to College Admissions includes updates on affirmative action, mental health, and the power of college essays. Their complementary “fire and ice” approach has earned them national media coverage and the 2023 NACAC John Muir Award for outstanding contributions to the profession. They will be presenting their program, “Independent Schools, Black Students, and the College Application Process.”
