400 Wins for Coach Thompson ’85

Sanford is proud to congratulate Coach Marcus Thompson ’85 on earning his 400th career victory as head coach of Sanford Girls Basketball.
Thompson reached the milestone Thursday night with a 78-45 win over Tatnall, further cementing one of the most successful coaching careers in Delaware high school basketball history.
In 22 seasons, Coach Thompson has compiled a 400-90 record, led the Warriors to five DIAA state championships, and guided Sanford to nine state championship game appearances. Along the way, he has helped develop dozens of student-athletes who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, including Lauren Park-Lane ’19, a 2023 All-Big East selection who starred at Seton Hall and later Mississippi State.

Former Sanford Athletic Director Joan Samonisky shared her congratulations on Instagram, writing, “Congratulations, Marcus!!! I am honored to have witnessed many of these 400 wins in my years as AD! Thanks for representing the Sanford Warriors with class for every one of these wins!”

Coach Thompson’s success has earned him a place among Delaware’s elite coaching ranks. Most recently, he was inducted into Sanford’s Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.
