Caitlyn Derrick Recognized Among Nation’s Top Music Educators

Elise Burke Parcha
School Band & Orchestra Magazine has named Sanford Performing Arts Instructor Caitlyn Derrick on its annual list of “50 Music Teachers Who Make a Difference,” honoring one educator from each state who is shaping both musicianship and character.
As an educator, the moments Ms. Derrick values most are the ones where students realize music belongs to them, too. “When my students have developed the agency to make musical choices in the repertoire we are working on,” she says, is what makes her most proud. “It is so inspiring to see students take ownership over the music they love… I love seeing students’ faces light up when they realize they are the ones who made the creative decisions–not me, the teacher.” In those moments, she adds, “I love serving as a guide with my students because it allows us to make music together.”

That sense of ownership extends beyond Sanford. “I hope I have given my students multiple avenues for music to be a part of their lives both inside and outside of school,” she shares, whether that means performing in ensembles, playing in a band with friends, creating music electronically, or simply enjoying concerts and playlists. “Wherever students fall on the musical spectrum, I want them to feel like music is a part of their lives in whatever way they choose.”

While music is the medium, Ms. Derrick’s teaching is grounded in the desire to help her students become “responsible, respectful, and overall good people.” Through daily routines and collaboration, she helps students build empathy by “listening to differing ideas and working through challenges together,” helping them become “positive contributors” and “kind friends to others.”

In recognizing Ms. Derrick, SBO Magazine highlights not just an exceptional educator, but a classroom where students grow as both musicians and as people. Sanford students are lucky to have her shaping melodies and making memories with them in Geipel each day!
