Commencement 2026

On Friday, June 5, Sanford School held its 90th Commencement Ceremony, honoring the 72 graduates of the Class of 2026.
The ceremony featured remarks from school leadership, student speakers, musical performances, and the presentation of diplomas and senior awards.

Jordan Perkins '26 opened the student speeches with a reflection on growth, identity, and the unique environment Sanford creates. Drawing on her own experience navigating a health challenge, Perkins spoke to the importance of being seen as a whole person. "Sanford gave us something not every school can, a place where you can actually be yourself, not a version of yourself or who you thought you were supposed to be, but just yourself," she said. Looking ahead, she encouraged her classmates to move forward with confidence. "We're not just leaving Sanford, we're stepping into what's next."

Adithi Chandra '26 followed with a speech centered on imperfection, vulnerability, and the common thread that runs through the Class of 2026. Drawing on poet laureate Ada Limón, Chandra reflected on the value of every experience, including difficult moments. "It's important that we recognize these imperfections as a part of ourselves, not just for our own well-being, so that we see the world and the people around us in a different light," she said. She closed with a call to compassion: "Choose compassion despite it all, believing that at our core, every drop of us carries goodness."

This musical performance of "Landslide" featured Charli Harris '26, Abigail Smith '26, Donovan Hendrix '26, and Ryan Schmidt '28.

Upper School history teacher Dr. Brian Taylor, selected by the senior class to deliver the Commencement address, drew on his background as a historian to weave together memories of the Class of 2026, from memorable classroom moments to athletic achievements to the founding of the Sean's House Club. "These students care about their community, and they know how to have a good time," he said.

Reflecting on the road ahead, Dr. Taylor encouraged graduates to draw strength from what they have already accomplished. "In approximately 18 short years, you've achieved much, living lives of accomplishment, purpose, and personality. Whatever demons, internal or external, you encounter down the road, remember the great things you did here while you were young and have confidence that you can face those demons down."

Head of School Jaime Morgan addressed the graduates with a personal reflection, noting that the Class of 2026 holds a special place in her history at Sanford, as both her first kindergarten class when she returned in 2013 and her first graduating class as Head of School. Drawing from Cynthia Erivo's letter to her younger self, Morgan offered the class a message of resilience and presence. "Don't be afraid of the moments where it feels like the world is falling out from under you. When the wreckage comes to a rest, you'll be on new sturdy ground," she said. She closed with an invitation to pause. "Don't get wrapped up in the what's next, because a lot of your nows are pretty spectacular."

Several students were recognized with Commencement awards:
  • Scholastic Award — Adithi Chandra and Caden Butcher
  • Jackie Pitts Alumni Award — Liam Jezyk
  • Thomas McCarthy Award for Citizenship — Abigail Smith
  • Kenneth D. Jones Memorial Award — Donovan Hendrix
  • Nancy C. Sawin Final Award — Ada Henry
  • Head of School Award — Abby Krape
Following the presentation of diplomas, the ceremony concluded with the traditional ringing of the Sanford bell, one ring for each graduate, and the singing of the alma mater.
