English (Grades 9–12)
The mission of the English department is to promote literacy while inspiring intellectual curiosity about and appreciation of the written word. We foster the growth of effective critical thinking, reading, and writing skills through the study of various genres and styles. Students develop an awareness of the power of language to convey and persuade, which then informs their oral and written expression. Through our emphasis on discussion-based learning, students develop poise as articulate public speakers and assume responsibility in contributing to a dynamic intellectual atmosphere. Students partake in various modes of writing and develop confidence in their clarity of expression through the emphasis on the writing process. We empower students to take intellectual risks and to reflect and revise as an essential component of growth and development. As 21st-century learners, students are also equipped with the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly technological world and to actively engage with different forms of media.
